Unearthed Arcana – Revised Subclasses

Wizards of the Coast reached the end of their flurry of Unearthed Arcana last week, but they haven’t gone into hiding. This week we get five revised subclasses: Path of the Ancestral Guardian, the bard’s College of Swords, the fighter’s Arcane Archer, the monk’s Way of the Kensei, and the sorcerer’s Favored Soul. This week’s PDF weighs in at a mere 6 pages considering, so relatively light reading compared to some of the heavier tomes we have been provided in that last couple of months.

We’re also asked to provide feedback on the Feats for Races PDF.

There’s a rumbling beneath my feet. I ignore it at first, thinking I’m just imagining things, but then there’s a pulse, and the lights flicker. My brow furrows, and I look outside into my backyard. My dogs begin to bark as clouds gather. Suddenly, I find myself running through a checklist. How many bottles of water do we have? Are we stocked on canned food? Where’s my cell phone, and will it still have service? The rumbling intensifies, but I stand there, paralyzed, my thoughts moving with the haste my legs should have. It approaches…

“Whenever you fire a nonmagical arrow from a shortbow or longbow, you can make it a magic arrow, with a +1 bonus to the attack and damage rolls.”

The scream fizzles in my throat.

Other than that, this looks quite good, I think? Kensei is a bit boring in execution but seems fine. College of Blades, well, we already have Valor, but sure, fine, this works well enough too. Ancestor Spirits are a little odd with their Defender flavor but definitely a cool subclass aside from that, and this is my favorite Favored Soul so far from a balance standpoint. But yeah, I’m unhappy about -5/+10 turning into -2/+10 followed by Curved Shot.

Kensei certainly isn’t flashy. You’re only getting some extra damage and AC. There are no abilities giving you battlefield control, or healing, or flight, or area attacks like the other monk subclasses.

  • The breakdown would have been done tonight, but various issues kept me from starting until 10:15 pm, and… well, it’ll be up tomorrow morning sometime I hope. So far, I like what I see in the Ancestral Guardian barbarian, the College of Swords is terrible (like, seriously, what happened here?), and the Arcane Archer is a pretty solid set of fixes, Cuix’s apoplectic rage notwithstanding. (Cuix isn’t wrong, but the problem gets “fixed,” sorta, as soon as the Arcane Archer gets their first +whatever bow.)

College of Swords would be better if it was just the College of S Words.

    • I would play that Jeopardy round.

It would be better than playing that archetype.

    • Well, there’s a low goddamn bar.
