11 is a slightly awkward number to work with, so in my take on this concept, I make it 10 and say the tie goes to the attacker--in this case the monster--instead of the tie always going to the player. The math works out the same, but it's more consistent with monster AC, and uses slightly fewer neurons to calculate.

Hi Michael,
your article gave me a very very good idea to give a little more rough side to the fights, as with player rolling for Defense there is no "hidden" DM intervention behind screens... so once you are in a fight, there is no way out, you roll and how it goes its only on you.

I was checking your math and there is something kinda odd...

All your reasoning seems fine but for one thing:

-If you want to keep the tie in favor of the rolling side the ACR for the monsternpc should be 12+bonus.

If you check all your maths you'll see that with 11+bonus there is a difference of 5% in both your first and second example.

Maybe is because in the first example you missed to count for the result of 13 (when listing valid results you go from 12 to 14 etc...)?

Thanks for the nice idea, hope i was of helps with the math,
Frank
