1) I allowed anyone to be a bladesinger in this world, so he mixes sword and spell being a MC fighter/wizard
2) they found a +1 dragonslaying longsword and he paid to have it converted to a rapier/saber
3) he also took a magic fire sword from the first BBEG they defeated.

The rest of the PCs don't really use swords, but have caught up to the dual wielding old man. To balance things out, the story of the campaign focused on the other PC backstories/development until recently.

Cool. The human cleric in my party is also in his 50ies. Fun times when he tried to read a scroll and had to step back in order to make the letters.

"His attacks with sword and spell hit harder than any of them."

By happenstance, or did you have a house rule to support it?

Studies suggest that people change careers 5-7 times in their life in modern society. This sort of mobility is probably relegated to the post-industrial era (I'm not an socio-economic professional, so this is just a guess), but it stands to reason it would exist to some degree in places like Sigil, Waterdeep, or Palanthas.

I have a player in my current campaign who is playing a man in his late 40s who decided to become an adventurer and an apprentice wizard. It is great to have 'Old' Uncle Gregor on a team full of young people half his age. His attacks with sword and spell hit harder than any of them. At level 12 we rolled a random treasure hoard and a Potion of Longevity was found, which Gregor drank to get a little spring back in his step and get 8 years younger.

Also in my current campaign 2 of my half-elf players were aged 40 years after seeing the 'horrifying visage' of a ghost. They were looking at having to play PCs who were deep into middle aged instead of being young 20 year olds.

p.s. This article was fun. I really like the Caramon example and liked that book a ton.
