I know this is late, but I didn't get around to reading this article until today, and I thought you should know that "depths of 100,000 fathoms" are impossible, at least on Earth. A fathom is 6 feet, so 100,000 fathoms is 600,000 feet. The Mariana Trench is about 36,000 feet deep. (On a related note, the title of Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a reference to distance traveled, not depth.)
