I think if they were different levels/ages they’d need a stronger hook to stay together, like be related or have a persistant threat rather than one that goes away and comes back.

On a slightly different note: how would starting age(s) affect the characters? Could a “party” (or group students who associate with each other) be made of different ages/ class levels?

I always thought it would be a great system to adjust for something like Harry Potter. Your advice would be very solid to apply as a framework for it.
