Or they just weren't focused on supporting that particular fiction when they were writing. Especially in XGTE, you can read between the lines to figure out what kinds of scenes the team sees as iconic for that subclass.

But then, tavern brawls are a tricky area for D&D combat, because their stakes are so different. Your goal isn't to kill, but to get people to fuck off, and you do it by dealing as much damage as possible to the furniture and random props. Fighters, rogues, and barbarians should be a lot better at tavern-brawling (even without the feat) than they are. (Other classes too, arguably.)

The weird monk proficiency with nearly any weapon was pretty cool from 1E. I wish they'd done something like that. It's by no means overwhelming but it's insanely dramatic in that Saturday afternoon kung fu action grip way that a high level monk could defeat a band of thugs with a rice bowl and a pair of chopsticks. I guess you can just refluff things and make that count as unarmed, but I like the notion of letting monks throw stuff like that, too.

Sometimes I think WotC worries too much about ye olde game balance.

It's also experienced something of a renaissance thanks to the recent return of the action film. Lateef Crowder has been making appearances for the last ten-ish years or so.

I first encountered it thanks to Tekken 3 and Eddie Gordo. There was also a brief US-pop culture flirtation with it thanks to the early-90's film "Only the Strong."

"I am familiar with capoeira as a word and little more..."

Yeah, I'm about the same. Actually, the first time I heard of it was when Claudio Pozas (who is himself Brazilian) did a drawing of a Capoeirist monk -- back in the early days of 3e, before he became a professional illustrator.

(Note: I tried posting this first with a link to Pozas' website, but it said it was awaiting moderation, and then when I reloaded the page about 20 minutes later the post disappeared. I understand why you'd want to vet external links to prevent spam, but every time I've tried to include a link in a comment lately, it's just vanished into the ether. I used to be able to do that with no issue, and it's frustrating that I can't anymore.)
