Most of the other suggestions, while nifty, depend too much on ectoplasm being a commodity that you can lug around by the gallon and buy at the market. That just seems wrong to me. Ectoplasm should be ephemeral. It doesn’t belong on the material plane. (Notwithstanding the fact that the original definition of ectoplasm, as conceived by 19th-century spiritualists, was literally cytoplasm from the spirit medium’s body that was somehow extruded to form a manifestation of a ghost.)

Except now number 8 has taken hold, and I want to make a psion who specializes in creating astral curry golems.
