In reply to <a href="https://www.tribality.com/2018/05/23/relationship-maps-and-social-progress/#comment-5261">Dave(s) 4 Goombella</a>.

I was getting my next campaign ready and started to think about outlining the adventure... then stopped and thought I don't know anything about the PCs or even which island they are going to start on. So now I am just fleshing out the world and waiting for the PCs to arrive. They might be treasure hunters, pirates/privateers, spies, etc.

I'll be running something like this for sure. Thanks Colin!

This is a solid walk-through on how to do this. Thanks!

If anyone is feeling this is too much, take a part of it. I ran a session zero and did just PC to PC connections in 3 rounds. I wish I added an NPC round now.

I can't recommend it enough. The group ended up with "our family ran a shipping empire until that damned kraken ruined our entire fleet and drove us to bankruptcy" as their group history.

For their personal history I tried out the 3:16: Carnage Amongst the Stars background system. The bonds, flaws, etc. were all left blank and instead I allow them to have "flashbacks" to define those items in the moment. Half are positive, and half are negative. Defining them gives the character some control over the initial scene - usually resulting in a swing of fortune for either victory (positive) or mitigating defeat (negative).

This looks great. I wanted to try something like this in my next homebrew campaign, something where the players and I would collaboratively define much of the setting based on their characters' backstories and motivations. This gives it a great structure.
