All art belongs to MCDM Will Doyle comes back from tabletop designing retirement to impress us with his ways of soloing a D&D adventure. In this article, he offers three new classes, made for games with one GM and one player. Attempting to use these classes with other PCs in your party will result in this heroic champion being way too overpowered. Consider that these classes are made to be as powerful as 4 PCs. These are the heroic warrior, […]

You see “aquatic” in one of my article titles, you know I’m working on stuff for Under the Seas of Vodari. Today, I’m thinking about how water, buoyancy, cold, darkness, and pressure might influence the construction of traps in dungeons. This might be a more direct window into my imagination and thought process than usual. I’m aiming for at least two standard traps and at least one complex trap. Now, there are a lot of standard traps that still work […]

Thumbnail Art by Aaron Ancheta Continuing my ongoing series on how to run some of the best D&D creatures comes the fan-favorite Beholder (or maybe DM’s favorite, as I think players don’t usually like them as much). They are great monsters full of personality and history in the game, coming from the very first edition of it. Inspired by HP Lovecraft’s stories, beholders are megalomaniac aberrations that come to lead and destroy, while gathering trophies and secrets… At first, I […]

This week’s Unearthed Arcana comes to us from the office of Mearls, Crawford, and the Mon Calamari Admiralty. These rules expand on the trap rules found in the DMG, with considerably more guidance for creating new traps and providing new rules for Complex Traps. Complex traps are mentioned in the DMG, but there isn’t a lot of detail there. We’re also going to ram head-first into the fundamental problem of traps in D&D’s class dynamic, and I’ll discuss that a bit as we go.
