					<description><![CDATA[In one of the last 3.x campaigns I played, my friend played a Samurai. I believe it was the 3.5 version out of CW, but I don&#039;t recall exactly (it was over a decade ago). The biggest problem that we ran into was actually one of &quot;setting clash&quot;. He wanted to play a Samurai that was fully shaped by the Western culture stereotype (which is fine, play what you like, it&#039;s a game). However, the rest of us weren&#039;t playing in that &quot;setting&quot;. So the DM often was hard pressed to figure out how to explain this &quot;foreign man in a foreign land&quot; scenario we had. Ultimately, he decided to base the campaign in a fairly large trading city on the coast. And over the sea was the &quot;eastern lands&quot;. So this character could have his Daimyo locally, but we didn&#039;t all have to be in the &quot;stereotypical Oriental setting&quot;. Meh, it worked for us well enough, I suppose.

I don&#039;t recall all of the specific ins-and-outs of those characters, but I do recall that the Dwarf Barbarian rapidly shadowed the Samurai when it came to anything combat related. The Samurai was more of a story-driving character, as the DM could throw out adventure hooks as &quot;Your Daimyo sends you on an errand. And he admonishes you to keep your uncouth companions under control, as he doesn&#039;t want a repeat of last time&quot;

Overall, I think that the Samurai would work best as the &quot;tank&quot; class if a group was running a specific OA-themed campaign. And all of the characters/classes came from this setting. It creates an odd narrative where the group has to do a lot of mental gymnastics in juxtaposing tropes when you have some OA and some non-OA classes adventuring together. Unless, of course, the classes are reskinned enough to mesh well with a homebrew setting.]]></description>
