I like the advantage/disadvantage mechanic. It gives you the epic feeling that action points used to give in a way that works well with 5e. I'm going to use this in my upcoming Eberron game!

I allow my players to use our equivalent of hero points to alter situations to their advantage. They narrate something that is feasible, and if I agree, they hand over their point (which the GM can use for a future complication). They may want a flashback moment where they prepared for a situation exactly like this by packing that useful tool. Or they may have help from a friendly faction at a critical time. It's powerful, but it's limited in how often it can be used, and has led to some really fun moments in our games.

Quick update...

After a discussion with my table, my players and I rejected my proposed homebrew system and are continuing to use the Action Points system. XP progress has slowed at level 5, so the points are worth more now vs. something to burn.

I think my next tweak would be to give out less dice or not make them available for attack rolls.

Awkward and out-of-the-world things happen all the time when dice are rolled. What you CAN do is to project the outcome of these instances.

So, in this case, the Lich becomes their No1 foe in order to get this phylactery back. Maybe the Lich offers something in return, maybe someone else wants this phylactery as well.

So, I'm using this in my campaign, and it's working really well so far. Except for one tiny problem.

A player picked up a lich's phylactery and used a hero point to nat20 their sleight of hand check to steal it.

A different player then used a hero point to make the lich nat1 their perception check to spot the theft.

So they managed to steal a lich's phylactery right out from under his nose. How do I deal with this kind of shenanigans?

The good are more moments. I like that it is per lvl so they arent using a ton a game. What I dont like is that they dont truely feel heroic imo. A fighter that misses one is 3 attacks say and uses a hero pt to hit deoesnt make that hit feel more heroic, its just what he has been doing all along.

That being said, i had 3 hero pts used by my players in their last game and they ALL rolled 1's.

What are the good and bad about hero points in your experience?
