I wound up not finding anything I wanted to pair with the 13th Age commander class for today’s article, but at the same time… there’s enough meat to justify deep coverage. If you’ll open your Book of Common Prayer System Reference Document to page, uh, whatever this page is: Commander. There are some superficial similarities to both the bard and the fighter – about like you’d expect, if you’ve read the History of the Warlord up to this point. Part […]

Sure, it’s been more than three years since the last article in the History of the Bard, but the tale of each class has grown in the telling and I wanted to do the same for bards, this time for Dungeon World and 13th Age. Those both have SRDs (DW, 13A), so you can follow along in your pew. Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five | Part Six Dungeon World The […]

I’ve been waiting for months to use this article title, don’t give me that look. Today I’m diving into 13th Age’s fighter class. Incidentally, I played my second full session of 13th Age at GenCon 2018 and had a great time playing a wizard. It’s a super good game, though its player-contribution style and One Unique Things are a challenge to handle well in a one-shot. Also, here’s a link to the fighter in the game’s SRD, in case you […]

Quite some time back, the estimable Tim Baker sent me this:
I had an idea for a topic or maybe even a series that you could consider covering in the future. I'd love to hear your take on damage, dying, and death in D&D (how's that for alliteration?). Healing could be included in the topic, too. It's an age-old question, but what are hit points?

As promised in the comments of last week’s article, today I’m covering the monk class in 13th Age, which was released in the 13 True Ways expansion. As a general rule, no two classes in 13th Age have much in common with one another, in terms of structure or gameplay loop. (I’m not intimately familiar with all of the 13th Age classes, so I may be overlooking something here.) As much as anything, though, the monk looks like a tabletop version of the Swordmaster class from Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, thanks to its use of opening, flow, and finisher attacks.

Previously in this series, I looked at one of the high-water marks for fine detail in domain rulership systems. This week, I’m going to some systems at the opposite extreme: 13th Age and Dungeon World. Not counting, of course, systems that simply have no rules for domain rulership or strongholds. Absence is different from minimalism – and I’m about to split that hair damned fine.
