That’s not the proper name for this UA release, which would be either Fighter, Rogue, and Wizard or PsychicSoulPsionics, but as those are both unhelpful names, you get Psionics, Round Four. This is a new, very 5e take: what if there’s no mystic or psion 20-level class? Instead, psionics is three subclasses, a handful of spells, and two feats. Also, folks? Psionics is one of the most contentious things we ever discuss about D&D. I’m not sure why that is, […]

In today’s History of the Classes article, I’m examining Dark Sun’s use of psionics in AD&D Second Edition. As far as I know, it’s the only 2e setting – out of the glorious variety of 2e settings – that deeply embraces psionics and makes it a centerpiece of the setting. My resources are the revised Dark Sun Campaign Setting (the one reworked to fit Skills and Powers), Dragon Kings, and The Will and the Way. I also have a copy […]

The aarakocra were one of my favorite monsters from the original Fiend Folio. They, along with the bizarre and oft-mocked flumph, were one of the only good races in the book and seemed ripe for heroic storytelling. Unfortunately, they weren’t available to the average player as a race (at least until Dark Sun) and creating appropriately balanced new races in the early editions was challenging. It’s a little thing, but opening the 5th ed Monster Manual and seeing the aarakocra […]

Way back in November 2014, I made some predictions on upcoming storylines between now and 2018. I predicted that they would do an Underdark storyline… but I was way off thinking it would come out in 2018. As we have learned more about the two storylines a year that will be coming out each year, here are my revised “predictions”, but I would say that this is wild guesses at this point. Here are the storylines and products that have […]

Unique and alien, thri-kreen provide for unusual roleplaying opportunities and unusual flavor at the table. The challenge? Thri-kreen are a powerful PC race (see Behind the Development below). Converting them to a standard PC race while maintaining their flavor and popular, race-specific powers was a challenge and even with this conversion DMs should consider before allowing them in their campaigns. If used, DMs and players […]
