Role-playing games are all about adventure, and there is nothing better than galloping around through the world with your horse. In fact, most of the popular RPG games are set in history, the primary way of transportation is horses.
However, in such games, horses are much more than just a mount that can be used for traveling from one place to another. Some of these games focused also on the relationship that the rider has with their horse.
Plus, there are some customizable options for your horse in some games, adding an additional element of personalization. And we all love that. Recently, I started a new RPG game, and after starting the game I entered the character creation mode. After a while, I noticed that I spent an hour just tweaking certain things about my character that nobody would notice.
But I had fun, and that’s what matters the most. So, if you like horses and want to play an RPG game, here are the best games you need to check out.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Does this game need an introduction? I don’t think so. Even if you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve definitely heard about Geralt and his loyal horse Roach. This game broke the video game world, and it is often praised as the best video game ever created.
But the thing that makes The Witcher 3 special is the relationship that Geralt has with his horse. It’s pure gold.
Now, when it comes to horse mechanics, it’s not the best game for sure. Roach is known for being glitchy, especially in difficult terrains on the map. It is also a game that it’s funny. For example, there is a scene where Roach gets stuck on a roof, and Geralt just accepts it and moves on like nothing happened.
If for whatever reason you never played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, this is the time to do it. I promise you.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Now let’s address the elephant in the room right away. Red Dead Redemption 2 might not be a true roleplaying game by most standards, but it definitely has some RPG elements in the game. This is an open-world action-adventure title that will put you in a time machine and place you back in a Western backdrop.
So, why do we pick Red Dead Redemption 2? Well, it is very hard to talk about horses in games without mentioning RDR2. In my opinion, this is the best video game ever created, especially when it comes to horse mechanics, aesthetics, versatility, and characteristics. The attention to detail is just staggering.
This is another game that pushes the horse-human relationship to a whole different level. And the level of realism just makes things a lot better. For example, you can whistle for your horse, but if it’s too far away they won’t hear you. Also, your horse testicles shrink in cold (yes, that’s a thing), and they get tired and hungry.
Honestly, I’m quite surprised that RDR2 doesn’t feature horse racing betting just like in real life. After all, there are many other gambling elements in the game, and horse racing would have been awesome.
Nonetheless, it seems like all the horse racing fans will have to stick with the 2024 Breeders’ Cup betting for now.
Therefore, there are plenty of things to do in RDR2 with your horse, and although it isn’t a true RPG, I definitely think that you should try it.
Elden Ring
Elden Ring brought back the thrill of exploration, but this time with a twist—your horse can double-jump. Yep, Torrent, the mystical steed in Elden Ring, can defy the laws of physics, which is a game-changer (literally) in the open world of the Lands Between. Torrent is essential for quickly covering long distances, escaping perilous situations, and even engaging in horseback combat.
Torrent not only moves fast but can also handle platforming sections, making him more than just a travel companion—he’s your lifeline in the vast, hostile world.
Elden Ring has sold over 20 million copies in its first year, and the seamless horse integration was praised by critics and players alike.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla brings horses into the Viking age. Eivor, the protagonist, rides into battle on horseback, charges through enemy lines, and explores the cold, rugged terrain of England.
You can unlock horses once you reach the village of Fornburg. You can also change the appearance of the horse buy buying things from an NPC vendor, but if you want the good stuff, try finding the hidden merchants.
The horses in Valhalla aren’t just for show—they’re vital for covering the game’s large, open landscapes and aiding in Viking raids. Plus, there’s a range of customization options, from mythical mounts to trusty steeds.
If you’re feeling fancy, why not upgrade your horse’s abilities to swim across rivers? No more getting stuck on the wrong side of a waterway!
Ghost of Tsushima
If you want a game where riding your horse feels zen, look no further than Ghost of Tsushima. The developers made sure that every time you jump on your horse to explore the breathtaking landscapes of feudal Japan, it’s like you’re living in an ancient painting. Not only does your horse carry you across the island, but it also plays a crucial role in combat, allowing you to strike from horseback.
You can name your horse in Ghost of Tsushima and choose from different colors and breeds. It’s a small touch, but it makes your horse feel like your personal companion.
Dragon’s Dogma
The often-underrated Dragon’s Dogma offers some of the most dynamic horse gameplay in an RPG. You can summon your mount to rush into battle or use it to explore the diverse and dangerous lands.
This year we got the latest Dragon’s Dogma 2, but for whatever reason developers decided not to include horses (I think they were lazy). This is just a shame because horses played an important role in the first edition of the game.
The action and freedom of movement in this game make horse riding an adrenaline-pumping experience, especially when you’re charging into monster-infested forests.
