Dark Sun Returns to Dungeons & Dragons in 2027

Wizards of the Coast announced at Gen Con 2026 that Dark Sun will return to Dungeons & Dragons in February 2027 as the game’s first setting developed specifically for mature audiences.
The new release will revisit Athas, a dying desert world devastated by destructive magic and ruled by tyrannical sorcerer-kings. Unlike traditional heroic fantasy settings, Dark Sun emphasizes survival, scarce resources, environmental destruction, political oppression, gladiatorial violence, and the struggle to endure in an unforgiving world.
The setting will launch with two primary books. Blood and Power is a player-focused gameplay expansion that will introduce character options designed for Dark Sun, including the long-awaited Psion class. Edge of Oblivion will provide Dungeon Masters with information about Athas, including its locations, history, monsters, adventures, and campaign material. A Dark Sun-themed version of the Player’s Handbook is also planned, along with a Dungeon Master’s screen and map pack.
The books will be rated for readers aged 18 and older because of their depictions of bloodshed, graphic violence, profanity, nudity, and sexuality. Wizards reportedly plans to sell the physical books shrink-wrapped, preventing their mature artwork from being displayed openly in stores. The violent announcement trailer suggests that the new edition will preserve the setting’s harsh tone rather than presenting a softened version of Athas.
The release will be supported by a wider “Season of Survival,” although Wizards has not yet explained exactly what that season will include. Additional adventures, organized play material, digital content, or related products may be announced closer to launch.
The History of Dark Sun
Dark Sun was originally released for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in 1991. Its world differed sharply from conventional fantasy settings, replacing green kingdoms and medieval forests with deserts, ruined civilizations, gladiatorial arenas, strange creatures, widespread psychic powers, and city-states controlled by immortal sorcerer-kings.
Magic is central to the destruction of Athas. Arcane spellcasters can drain life from the surrounding environment, leaving the land barren and contributing to the world’s ecological collapse. Metal is scarce, water is precious, and many familiar D&D creatures and character ancestries appear in dramatically altered forms.
The setting received extensive support during the 1990s before disappearing from regular publication. Wizards revived Dark Sun for Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition in 2010, but it did not receive an official Fifth Edition setting book.
Interest in its return increased after Wizards released playtest material featuring post-apocalyptic subclasses and the Psion, a psychic character class strongly associated with Dark Sun. The 2027 books will mark the setting’s first full release for the current Dungeons & Dragons rules.
