Anthology Adventures

Here’s a quick rundown for each of the six adventures.

The Lost City

1st-Level to 3rd-Level Characters

This introductory adventure from 1982 was written with new Dungeon Masters in mind to accompany the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set. Tom Moldvay purposely designed the adventure so that only the upper floors of the Cynidicean ziggurat the party explores were fully detailed. The lower levels had sparse information and needed the DM’s creativity to flesh out the specifics.

When a Star Falls

4th-Level to 5th-Level Characters

Originally released in 1984 by TSR UK, this adventure written by Graeme Morris has been remembered for its intricate plot and inventive adventure hook. The adventure’s focus is on a fallen star and the groups who that covet it.

Beyond the Crystal Cave

6th-Level Characters

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this adventure was highly touted when it was published in 1983 by TSR UK. It’s emphasis on compassion and pacificism as the resolution to its conflict was a departure from the common hack-and-slash dungeons of the time. The adventure takes PCs into the Feywild to find two young lovers in an enchanted fairytale garden.

Pharaoh

7th-Level to 8th-Level Characters

This adventure was the first of the Desert of Desolation trilogy. Published in 1980 by Tracy and Laura Hickman’s company, DayStar West Media, it was sold to TSR, who reprinted it in 1982 and hired Tracy. It was praised for its masterful dungeon design that seamlessly blended a compelling narrative.

The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth

9th-level to 10th-Level Characters

The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth was a tournament adventure created by Gary Gygax for Winter Con V in 1976. This adventure took players into the caverns beneath the Yatil Mountains, where they could explore the former lair of the archmage Iggwilv (or Tasha).

Expedition to the Barrier Peaks

11th-Level to 13th-Level Characters

Written by Gary Gygax in 1980 as Module S3, this remains one of the most iconic old school DnD adventures of all time. The adventure combines classic fantasy elements with some out-of-this-world science fiction technology with a crashed spaceship, futuristic weaponry, and malfunctioning robots.
