Sly Flourish’s City of Arches Kickstarter

Today I want to tell you about another Kickstarter that is running right now: The City of Arches: A High-Fantasy 5e RPG City Sourcebook by Sly Flourish, the double secret code name of Mike Shea. I know Mike mainly through the many episodes of the Tome Show that he appears on, including the excellent Behind the DM’s Screen series, but he also has a lot of great products that you very likely already know and love. (This Kickstarter is a great chance to pick up PDFs of those products at bargain prices, too!)

About the City of Arches

Two thousand years ago, a tyrant of unimaginable power built a city connected to hundreds of worlds he intended to conquer or already had. Now, a thousand years after his defeat and exile, all remnants of the tyrant, including his very name, have been washed from history. Though mostly dormant, beings sometimes step through one of these archways with little memory of where they’ve come from.

Today the city is a bustling metropolis with people of many races, species, ancestries, and heritages. Yet in the depths and outer reaches of the city, secret cults sense the void where the lost tyrant once resided and seek to bring the Nameless King back to power.

About the Book

The City of Arches is a high fantasy city sourcebook available for your fantasy roleplaying games now being funded on Kickstarter!

Designed for D&D and 5th edition variants, and usable with any fantasy RPG – the City of Arches gives you a site of endless adventure you can drop into any campaign setting.

This book has been built from the ground up on the principles of the Lazy Dungeon Master to make it as easy as possible for you to build and experience your own adventures in this fantastic city.

Three monoliths stand in a subterranean lake. Lashing tentacles threaten a boat full of adventurers heading to the monoliths.

Key Features of the City of Arches Product

  • A PDF and hardcover sourcebook designed to help Lazy GMs build fantastic adventures in, above, below, and beyond the City of Arches.
  • A city-based setting where every race, species, ancestry, or heritage makes sense.
  • A mixture of potential themes including political intrigue, shadowy conspiracy, and location-based high adventure.
  • A flexible location you can drop into any published or homebrew campaign setting or use as its own stand-alone setting.
  • Limitless options to expand adventures in this world or any other.
  • Beautiful full-color overland maps, dungeon maps, and artwork.

There’s an amazing preview PDF available on the Kickstarter page. You’re doing yourself a disservice not to at least check that out—it’s great stuff, showcasing a kind of highly detailed location design that WotC mostly doesn’t have the freedom of word count to offer.

Compatible 2024 D&D, 5e, and other Fantasy RPGs

The City of Arches sourcebook focuses heavily on the background, lore, hooks, and tools you need to run your fantasy roleplaying games in this unique setting. It does not focus heavily on game mechanics. Thus, it’s extremely easy to run this sourcebook with a variety of systems including 2014 D&D, 2024 D&D, Tales of the Valiant, and Level Up Advanced 5e. It can further be played with non-5e-compatible systems such as Pathfinder 1 & 2, Shadowdark, and others. The book includes guidance for shifting the theme of the world to support either games of high fantasy or those of a grim survival atmosphere. Whatever fantasy RPG system you play, you’ll find this book easily incorporated into your own tales of high adventure.
