“Looking for more advice on modifying character classes? Dive into customization with some advice on class design.” Rodney Thompson, senior designer for the Dungeons & Dragons, just released the latest Unearthed Arcana article. The article outlines:
- how to create new class options
- gives class-specific guidelines for tinkering with class features for all the classes in the Player’s Handbook
- provides an example of modifying a class feature by creating a Ranger with no spells
- provides an example of a new class option by creating a Favored Soul class (originally from 3e)
I’m really liking the Ranger with no spells. I created a PC-NPC archer using the Fighter class, but this would have been a much better match for the character I was looking to create.
Until this came out, if I was going to tinker with a class, I would usually offer a new class option versus building a whole new class. I’m going to try out tweaking a class feature and building a class of my own using this framework. I might even post them in a future article.
Happy Building!
