Candlekeep Mysteries is the Next D&D 5e Book Coming March 2021

UPDATEs

Last week we saw multiple retail outlets post holding pages for an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons book. We also learned that details for the new book would be officially revealed on January 12, 2021. Well, the leaks continue and we have a cover image and title a day early from Penguin Random House. The next D&D hardcover book for 5th edition will be Candlekeep Mysteries, releasing on March 16, 2021, for US$49.95.

This book will not focus on providing player options or DM rules content like Xanathar’s Guide to Everything or Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything or a bunch of monster stat blocks like Volo’s Guide to Monsters or Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. This book is an adventure anthology (like Tales from the Yawning Portal and the adventures found in Ghosts of Saltmarsh) and will provide 17 mystery-themed adventures. The mysteries “are intended to be played as one-shots in-person or online or simply dropped into any existing campaign. Candlekeep Mysteries is perfect for Dungeon Masters who are looking to inject new characters, story hooks, magic items, and monsters into their game without tons of prep.”

Some of the product information is not yet available, such as page count.

An anthology of seventeen mystery-themed adventures for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

Candlekeep attracts scholars like a flame attracts moths. Historians, sages, and others who crave knowledge flock to this library fortress to peruse its vast collection of books, scribbled into which are the answers to the mysteries that bedevil them. Many of these books contain their own mysteries—each one a doorway to adventure. Dare you cross that threshold?

Candlekeep Mysteries is a collection of seventeen short, stand-alone D&D adventures designed for characters of levels 1-16. Each adventure begins with the discovery of a book, and each book is the key to a door behind which danger and glory await. These adventures can be run as one-shot games, plugged into an existing Forgotten Realms campaign, or adapted for other campaign settings.

This book also includes a poster map of the library fortress and detailed descriptions of Candlekeep and its inhabitants.

Adventure writers include: Graeme Barber, Kelly Lynne D’angelo, Alison Huang, Mark Hulmes, Jennifer Kretchmer, Daniel Kwan, Adam Lee, Ari Levitch, Sarah Madsen, Christopher Perkins, Michael Polkinghorn, Taymoor Rehman, Derek Ruiz, Kienna Shaw, Brandes Stoddard, Amy Vorpahl, and Toni Winslow-Brill.

For those speculating that the spring 2021 book would focus on providing content for a classic D&D setting such as Dragonlance or Spelljammer, you’ll have to wait until this fall or longer.

I am very excited to get support for running mysteries in D&D 5e and can’t wait to read this book. Let us know in the comments what you think this book will cover and if you are happy about the details that are starting to emerge.
